If it looks tousled, frizzy or overly dry, you're probably over-caring for your hair. Experts share simple tips to help you fall in love with your locks this summer.

Ever feel there is something completely wrong with your hair? You’re probably right.

Whether you live in a warm climate or a city with ridiculous humidity, your hair may have the tendency to feel fried. According to a study by the Renee Furterer Research Center published in iVillage Beauty Magazine, after just three days of sun exposure, the scale-like cells that cover individual hair shafts begin to pull off. This can make your hair dry, dull, fragile and brittle.

Stay Consistent

Some hair stylists say to use sunscreen in your hair, while others may suggest conditioner. Whatever you do, all seem to agree consistency is the key.

“Inconsistency is the biggest mistake people make,” says Hollywood celebrity hair stylist Jose Neira. “Find a hair stylist you like and stick with them in order to keep from changing them all the time.”

Hair Susceptible to Damage

Dyed, highlighted or relaxed hair may be more likely to suffer from UV damage depending on how much tender love and care it gets, stylists say. Neira discovered in his 24 years of experience that people who live in extremely humid or warm climates need to add more moisture to their hair.

“I believe that men and women should want to keep their hair looking as natural as possible,” he says. “Don’t think if you cut your hair that will be the end of your problems. Your hair can be so short and still not be balanced with enough nutrients it needs to stay healthy.”

Common Hair Mistakes

  • Self cutting: If there is a strand out of place, instead of cutting it take a shower and water will straightened it out.
  • Washing hair daily: Regular washing strips essential oils and can leave it dry and brittle. If you have naturally oily hair, don’t rub the scalp vigorously, as this stimulates oil glands to produce more sebum.
  • Towel drying your hair: The action of rubbing your hair with a towel actually roughens the hair cuticle, which can lead to frizzy, flyaway hair.
  • Leaving shampoo and conditioner in your hair: Shampoo and conditioner that are not thoroughly rinsed out of the hair is at the root of the most bad hair days. It counteracts styling products, leaving hair looking dull, limp and unmanageable. Try to rinse your hair for an extra couple of minutes after shampooing and conditioning. And always use products recommended for your hair type.
  • Blow-drying until completely dry: Overheating your hair makes it susceptible to breakage and strips it of shine. A better idea is to blow-dry hair until it’s 80% dry, then let the rest air dry. Alternatively, use a leave-in conditioner or styling product that protects your hair from heat styling. Also, hold the hair dryer about a foot away from your hair.
