This simple to do, at-home haircut is stylish, low maintenance and inexpensive for boys of all ages.

Children’s hair cuts—especially for boys—don’t have to cost as much as an adult cutting service. This inexpensive cut done at home is easy for any parent or caregiver and no experience in hair cutting is necessary.

Tools Required

  • Comb or brush
  • Clipper (Oster, Wahl, and Andis all make affordable, professional quality versions)
  • 1/2” - 1” guard
  • towel or neck brush
  • scissors
  • razor optional
  • hair product not required

Steps to Clipping Hair

  1. Choose either a standing or sitting position for the boy, depending on how tall he his compared to the person cutting his hair.
  2. Comb or brush boy’s hair so that there are no knots or tangles.
  3. Leave hair dry. This is easier for a clipper cut as hair will not be plastered against the scalp, which makes it difficult for the blade to lift hair.
  4. Starting from the front and working towards the back, rest clipper on widow’s peak and slowly “brush” clipper through hair in short, even strokes.
  5. Fold ears down gently to trace around the hairline in this area.
  6. Take your time: it will take probably 10 minutes for a non-professional to work through the whole head.
  7. Ensure whole head is evenly shaved. Length should be consistent without any trouble as this is the purpose of the guard. Go back over any areas that were missed until satisfied with the overall length.
  8. Trim any stray hairs around the hairline with sharp scissors. They do not have to be professional shears as long as they are sharp.
  9. Shave neck hair with a razor.
  10. Use a towel, neck brush or blow dryer to sweep hair trimmings off neck and face.

Toddlers and Razors

Toddlers are quite fearful of the sound of razors close to their ears when they cannot see what the razor is doing. They fear being cut by a razor even without any previous experience in being injured this way. It is the sound that this age group finds most disturbing. To prepare a child, turn the razor on away from the head, in front of the child so he can see it and get accustomed to the sound before it is applied to his scalp or skin. Move the razor slowly to the child and if he expresses nervousness explain what the razor will do and that it will not hurt him. An alternative to an electric razor for neck shaving is a disposable razor.

Hair Tattooing

Take this brush cut to the next level and try hair tattooing. A specialty trimmer and carving blade is needed for intricate detail. These can be purchased from local beauty suppliers but are more expensive than regular clippers and trimmers.
