In the world of haircuts and hairstyles, there are thousands of stories of disastrous results from barbershops and hair salons both inexpensive and posh.

There is an old ditty that goes, “What’s the difference between a good haircut and a bad haircut?” Answer, “Two weeks.” It may take more time than that. An uneven cut will remain uneven just grow longer. If the client is a woman, a bad haircut can mean jagged bangs, sides and back or too much hair thinning on the top, "flat head."

Deciding on Either a Barbershop or a Hair Salon

The difference between a Barber and a Hairstylist is a Barber gives haircuts to the client’s specifications. They don’t add color, product or do extensive combing. Most clients of a barbershop are men. Because men’s hair is shorter, a bad cut is more obvious. The results may be a cut that is left too long, a choppy haircut at the back, top or sides, not shaped properly at nape or too much taken off all around.

A Hairstylist cuts, shapes, colors, curls and adds products like mouse, gels and sprays to help shape a hairstyle. Women with long hair can spent a considerable amount of time and money having their hair cut and styled for a special occasion like a wedding, etc. So it’s important to find an all around good stylist for all lengths and styles of hair.

The first step in finding a barber or hair stylist is word of mouth. Ask friends and relatives who have had a good haircutting/styling experience to recommend a hair salon or barbershop. And ask specifically for the recommended stylist. Skills can vary from one person to another in the same shop. A stylist who can cut long hair may not be as capable with short hair.

Also it takes a special skill and patience when giving toddlers or children’s haircuts. Haircuts for teenagers can also be a challenge. Teens usually come equipped with a photo or haircut idea of a style from a haircut site based on the latest teen fad or a favorite movie or singing idol.

How to have a Good Haircutting or Styling Experience

A bad haircut or style is one in which the client is not happy with the results. Come to the salon with pictures of the desired style or tell the stylist exactly which haircut is appropriate. Watch each cut being made and don’t be afraid to speak up if it’s getting too short or not thinned out enough.

Visiting a barber or hair salon should be a pleasant, rewarding experience for both the client and the service provider. Friendliness and efficiency are important. But beware of the overly chatty stylist. A person who talks constantly while cutting and styling is not concentrating on the job at hand.

Don’t depend on price to ensure a good result. Personal preferences vary, what one person considers a good service may not please another. Whether paying seventy-five dollars or twelve dollars, the result should compliment a person’s look and lifestyle. A good, experienced hair stylist is gem to be treasured.
