Maintaining professional hair colour is still possible during tough times. Try these suggestions to make salon colour last longer, and to save money on colour services.

Today's economy means cutting corners, and here's how to do it at the salon.

Extend Time Between Colour Services

  • Stylists try and book follow-up colour appointments for 4 weeks after a fresh colour service. Hair grows between ¼” – 1” per month. Depending on how fast an individual’s hair grows, root touch-ups might able to be extended an extra week of two. In a 6-month period, savings could range from $100-$500 by getting roots done every six weeks instead of every four.
  • Embrace the look of dark roots like celebrities
  • Madonna, Jessica Simpson, and Rihanna have all sported hairstyles where their roots are highly noticeable. It’s been a trend for several years that shows confidence and a boldness associated with high-end fashion.
  • When a woman puts effort into her hairstyle and dress, roots say, “I know my roots are showing. I want it this way.” When the entire look is unkempt and sloppy it says that the woman doesn’t care about her appearance.

Try a Demi or Gloss Service

  • Demi-permanent colour like PM Shines by Paul Mitchell, and gloss services like Sebastian’s Cellophanes are less expensive alternatives to touch up roots instead of a full permanent colour root touch-up.
  • They are transparent colour so they will blend grey and make it much less noticeable. It’s a less expensive service because it takes much less time than a permanent colour application.
  • This will buy a few extra weeks between permanent colour root touch-ups. Demis and glosses fade on tone so it will not affect any future permanent service.

Experiment With Highlights

  • Instead of the usual 10 foils that can cost $10-15 per foil, try fewer highlights that are more dramatic.
  • Change the placement so that maybe there is a panel of colour along the front, or peek-a-boo highlights hidden in the length.
  • Using a lighter or darker colour than normal that makes a stronger impact and fewer foils will be needed.

Protect Colour from Fading

  • Make sure to use shampoos and conditioners that are colour safe.
  • All professional hair care product brands make products that reduce the amount of colour fadage on professional hair colour.
  • Kenra and PureOlogy make especially good quality sulphate-free products that do not strip colour.

Try a Monochromatic Look

  • Eliminate the cost of foils and highlights altogether by going with a monochromatic look of all one haircolour.
  • This look is especially beautiful on long, straight hair.
  • Celebrities like Beyonce, Lindsay Lohan and Jennifer Connelly have all had beautiful hair with dark colours in this style.

Try these ideas to save money and time during today’s economy, while still enjoying the benefits and results of professional salon hair colour. Save money on professional hair care products as well.
